Safety for Building Transportation Systems

A presentation of elevator equipment in buildings affecting building owners, tenants and visitors. The presentation and discussion will include various aspects of safety, performance, liability, and cost.

Scott Hulstrom started his career with the International Union of Elevator Constructors in 1988 when he was hired by Otis Elevator Company as a construction helper installing Hydraulic and Traction elevators. In 1994 after completing the National Elevator Industry Educational Program, Scott then passed the Mechanics exam. He continued to work as a Mechanic for Otis Elevator Company installing elevators and eventulally transferred into Service and Repair. 

From 1999 to 2007 Scott worked in Southeastern Massachusetts for ThyssenKrupp
and Associated companies as a Local Representative and Mechanic providing
maintenance and repairs. During this period Scott was a continuing education
instructor providing state mandated classes for elevator mechanic licensing in
Massachusetts.

Since 2007 Scott has lived and worked in IUEC Local 140 Arizona. He began work there as a Mechanic in Charge for Otis Elevator Company in Southern Arizona. Scott went to work for ThyssenKrupp Elevator Company in 2011. There he was employed to provide installations, modernization, adjusting, repair, maintenance and testing. 

In addition to his work in the elevator industry, Scott served in the United States Army Reserve being assigned to a field unit as a Medic, Wardmaster, and Platoon Sergeant. After seven years he received an honorable discharge at the rank of Staff Sergeant. 

Scott is a Certified Elevator Inspector (CEI) meeting the requirements of the ASME QEI-1 Standard. Scott sits on the board of several active committees, including the ASME Inspections, Hydraulic, A18 Standards, US TAG to ISO/TC 178, QEI, Editorial, New Technology and Wind Turbine Elevator Committees. Since 2013 he has been providing instruction for QEI certification to the inspection community. In addition he is the Code Committee Liaison supporting others in their participation on code committees. Scott is a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College where he earned an “Associate Degree of Applied Science in Apprenticeship Technology: Elevator Constructors”. Scott is also an Authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor, Confined Space & Disaster Site Worker Trainer.
